How to use Velo nicotine pouches: what each UK page says
Velo says tuck a pouch under your top lip for up to 30 minutes and start on Mellow. Two UK retailers print longer times. The four pages, side by side.
To use Velo nicotine pouches, open the can, take one pouch and tuck it under your top lip, between lip and gum. Velo’s UK pages say to keep it there for up to 30 minutes, then put it in a bin or in the lid of the can. Velo tells new users to start on its Mellow tier.
This evergreen how-to rests on four pages this desk read on 8 October 2026: two of Velo’s UK pages and guides from the retailers Haypp and Northerner.
How to use Velo nicotine pouches, step by step
Velo’s UK how-to page puts it in three words: pop, tuck, feel.
- Pop open a can and take out one pouch.
- Tuck it under your top lip. Velo’s beginner’s guide, dated 7 September 2023, says between upper lip and gum, with “no right way to place it”.
- Feel the “burn”, which the page defines as a heat and tingle on the gum or in the mouth.
- Leave it up to 30 minutes, then dispose of it “in the bin or in the lid of your can”.
How long do you leave a Velo pouch in?
| Page | Date shown | Time in the mouth | Pouches a day | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Velo how-to page | Undated | “Up to 30 minutes” | Not stated | Mellow, “for new VELO users” |
| Velo beginner’s guide | 7 Sep 2023 | “Up to 30 minutes at a time” | No figure | “4mg or 6mg VELO MINI” |
| Haypp guide | 24 Mar 2026 | About 30 minutes; releases for “20 to 60 minutes”; some users “up to 60” | 8-10, from “Haypp’s own data” | “Lower nicotine strengths” |
| Northerner guide | Updated 25 Nov 2025 | 20-30 minutes, “up to 45 minutes if preferred”; its FAQ says “up to 60” | Start with one or two | “A lower strength” |
Both retailers go past Velo’s 30 minutes. Haypp attributes the 30 to Velo, then gives its own 20-to-60 range. Northerner prints three ceilings on one page: 45 minutes in its steps, the 60-minute mark as a sign to remove the pouch, and “up to 60 minutes” in its FAQ.
What strength Velo should a beginner use?
Velo’s UK page sells Mellow at 4 mg (Mini cans only) and 6 mg, starts Original at 6 mg and Intense at 8 mg, and says “Experienced nicotine users that are new to VELO should still start with Mellow.” Northerner’s menu uses its own bands, Normal 3.1-6 mg and Strong 6.1-9 mg among them, so an 8 mg Velo Original is “Strong” in Northerner’s words, not Velo’s. The full ladder is in what the dots on Velo pouches mean, and stated strength and delivered nicotine explains why a milligram figure is not a dose.
The age of sale changes on 29 October 2026
DHSC guidance published on 11 August 2026 says that from 29 October 2026 it will be an offence to sell a nicotine product, nicotine pouches named, to anyone under 18 anywhere in the UK, online included, and for an adult to buy one on an under-18’s behalf. None of the four how-to pages read mentions that date, though Velo’s says its product is not suitable for under-18s. Background is in our age of sale piece.
Questions readers ask about using Velo
How long do you leave a VELO pouch in? Velo’s UK pages say up to 30 minutes, then dispose of it. Haypp says a pouch releases nicotine for 20 to 60 minutes and some users keep it in for up to 60; Northerner says 20 to 30 minutes, up to 45 if preferred. Velo’s 30 minutes is the brand’s own instruction.
How do you open a VELO can? Velo’s page says only to pop the can open. Haypp describes a seal on the side of a new tub that you peel or break before twisting the lid; Northerner says to hold the can firmly and twist. Velo says a used pouch can go in the lid.
How many VELO pouches a day? Velo’s two pages read give no daily figure; its beginner’s guide says it depends on preference, nicotine experience and strength. Haypp says its own data shows an average customer uses three cans a week, roughly 8 to 10 pouches a day, which describes buying, not a recommendation. Northerner suggests starting with one or two.
What strength VELO should a beginner use? Velo’s UK page says to start on Mellow, sold at 4 mg in Mini cans and 6 mg in Slim and Mini cans, even for experienced nicotine users new to the brand. Its beginner’s guide says 4 mg or 6 mg Velo Mini. The how-to page also says Velo is not for anyone who does not already use nicotine.
The figures above are the brand’s and retailers’ wording, not this desk’s advice. Contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical, and these products are for adults only.
